This course will examine all the biological principles underlying current biotechnology in the fields of human genetics, and genetic engineering. Methods of basic scientific research, the impact of technology on society, and the ethical problems in human genetics, will be explored. Topics include gene structure, function, expression, and manipulation in both the prokaryotes and eukaryotes principles of recombinant DNA technology, microbial biotechnology, animal and plant biotechnology, medical biotechnology, DNA profiling, forensics, and the regulation of biotechnology and patenting.Prerequisite: BIO321 Genetics.[3-0, 3 cr.]
