Description
This course surveys the history of the societies and polities of the Arabs from the Ottoman conquests of the early sixteenth century to the twentieth century. The course will focus on the following periods and themes: the expansion of the Ottoman empire (16th century); the global crisis of the 17th century; the era of the notables (18th century); the age of revolutions and reform (19th century); European colonial penetration of the region (19th century/20th century); and finally the period of decolonization and globalization (20th century).
