History of Art and Architecture III

The last course of the History of Art and Architecture sequence surveys the development of Western art and architecture from 1830 to 1945. Thinking beyond the established canon, the course critically addresses the political, aesthetic, institutional and cultural forces that have contributed to shaping this canon. Problems we encounter when we acknowledge that art is a cultural product include the uneasy fit of style-period categories or the isms of art, gender, historical definitions of the avant-garde, the consumption and display of art, and the status of the artist in society.
