Beyond the Canon

A course covering the following topics: folktales, the novella in The Arabian Nights, and the hero sagas such as Sirat Bani Hilal. This course aims at studying the textual history of this special genre, its language, motives, and structures. Students are also exposed to various methodological approaches to folk literature.
