This course is at the juncture between international relations, peace studies, security studies, human rights and gender studies. The primary objective of this course is to review the theories on security, the feminist perspectives on security, and feminist theory of international politics. This course will cover gender-based violence in the context of public and private spaces and in periods of war and peace. Furthermore, the course will examine the role of both state and non-state actors in the perpetuation of violence against women during conflict. Finally, the course will review the role of the women’s movement in the development of gender security agendas in the international system and human rights.
