## Facts

- Course code: CHE 311
- Title: Chemical Thermodynamics
- University: Lebanese American University (LAU)
- Subject: Chemical Engineering
- Department: Chemical Engineering
- Credits: 3
- Professors on record (1): Mazen Georges Nakad

## Catalogue description

This course emphasizes the First and Second Laws for closed and open systems (control volumes), thermodynamic properties and equations of state, and chemical thermodynamics of mixtures. Topics include mass, energy, and entropy balances for steady-flow devices, property relations, chemical potential and fugacity/activity and non-ideal behavior, phase equilibria, and chemical reaction equilibrium. Applications emphasize non-ideal thermodynamic property models, including liquid activity coefficient models, and phase equilibria for multicomponent systems including vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE), liquid-liquid equilibrium (LLE), and vapor-liquid-liquid equilibrium (VLLE). Thermodynamic cycles are introduced through Carnot limits and basic cycle performance metrics (efficiency and COP) with selected engineering applications. Second-year standing.
