This course focuses on the process of construction as fundamental to the process of architectural design. Principal theories of construction are introduced with vernacular and historical examples, providing a foundation for the study of materials, their origins, meanings, properties, and methods of assembly. Students investigate construction materials/systems in concrete, masonry, steel, and wood, including basic details, components, and their role as finishing materials for walls, floors and ceilings. Pre-requisite: ARCH 332 Design Studio IV, Co-requisite: ARCH 431 Design studio V
